Johannesburg : Mahatma Gandhi’s great-grandson Satish Dhupelia has died in Johannesburg, South Africa, due to complications related to the coronavirus. He was 66 years old and worked as a community worker in South Africa. His family has confirmed the news.

Satish Dhupelia’s sister Uma Dhupelia-Mesthrie confirmed the news and said that her brother had died due to complications related to Covid-19. She said his brother had pneumonia and he had been in hospital for a month for treatment. During treatment, he contracted the coronavirus.

Died of a heart attack
Uma Dhupelia said in a social media post, “My dear brother died after suffering from pneumonia for a month. He succumbed to covid19 while undergoing treatment at the hospital.” “He had a heart attack this evening and then died,” she said in a post on Facebook on Sunday.

Uma Dhupelia stated in her post that Satish Dhupelia was born on 19 November 1954. He was the son of Shashikant and Sita Dhupelia. He is active in various projects honoring the memory of Mahatma Gandhi. Satish Dhupelia’s family consists of two sisters Uma and Kirti Menon who live there. All three are the heirs of Manilal Gandhi. Three siblings are descendants of Manilal Gandhi, who was kept in South Africa by Mahatma Gandhi to continue his work after returning to India two decades later.
