New Delhi : About 5 crore users have been affected by the shutdown of Internet service in Delhi NCR. The Home Ministry has banned the internet in many parts of the capital. After this, Internet users were troubled for many hours. Following the uproar during the farmers’ tractor rally, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has shut down internet services in Singhu, Ghazipur, Tikri, Mukarba Chowk, Nangloi and their surrounding areas of NCT (National Capital Region).

Although the Ministry of Home Affairs has not specifically specified anything about Internet services – mobile or home broadband – users in a large part of the city are facing difficulties in using the Internet.

According to data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), till last October, Delhi has around 52.72 million (5.2 crore) mobile users. Apart from this, there is also a large number of wireline broadband users in Delhi which are in addition to mobile users.

However, the Ministry of Home Affairs has banned internet service only. But operators such as Jio’s telecom networks are completely IP-based in which data or voice calls – as all data flows through the network. Out of 5.2 crore internet users in Delhi, Reliance Jio alone has 1.88 crore subscribers. In such a situation, if internet services are stopped, it essentially means that the data flowing from Jio’s network will also be blocked, this will result in all the services of the network like Reliance Jio, be it internet or voice call. This is the reason that mobile users are facing problems in making voice calls wherever the internet is affected.
