Mumbai : The participation of 10 teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL) can be approved at the Annual General Assembly Meeting (AGM) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). However, it will be implemented from 2022 in place of the upcoming season (2021). The issue of including the new IPL franchise will be the most prominent in this meeting to be held in Ahmedabad on Thursday.

It is learned that most of the stakeholders believe that in 2021 it would be a hasty decision to have 9 or 10 IPL teams. This will give the new franchisees very little time to form a competitive team.

A senior BCCI official told PTI on the condition of confidentiality, “There are many ways in this matter which need to be discussed. Most of the stakeholders feel that there is little time for auction before the IPL to be held in April. ‘

He said, ‘You have to order the tender and prepare the bidding process. If two teams win the bid by the end of January or the beginning of February, they should be given time for the auction, which may be held in March. In such a situation, you will get very less time to plan for a new franchise.’

Gautam Adani and Sanjeev Goenka (former franchise Rising Pune Supergiants owners) are some of the biggest names interested in buying the teams.

In IPL of 10 teams, 94 matches will be organized, for which about two and a half months will be needed, this can make the calendar of international cricket chaotic. Along with this, availability of top foreign players should be ensured for the entire duration of IPL.

The broadcast amount is according to 60 matches per year which will need to be renegotiated. Currently Star India pays Rs 16,347.50 crore for the period between 2018-2022 and it is for 60 matches per year.
