New Delhi : The law has been made after the ordinance was approved by the Governor in Uttar Pradesh recently against the ordinance brought against ‘Love Jihad’. On the other hand, many voices are also being raised against this law. Those opposed to this include former Supreme Court judge Madan Lokur. Lokur has said that this law is against freedom of choice.

On Sunday, Lokur said during a lecture, ‘The ordinance that has recently passed in Uttar Pradesh is unfortunate because it ignores the freedom to choose ordinances, dignity and human rights. He said that these laws against conversational marriages are violations of the law developed by the Supreme Court to protect freedom of choice and dignity of the person.’

Lokur also referred to the Hadiya case of 2018. He said, ‘What happened to the order given by the Supreme Court in the Hadiya case in 2018? Referring to the Supreme Court order, he said that it was said that a woman can convert to Islam on her own free will and marry a man of her choice.’

In political discussions, only a case called Love Jihad will be considered as an illegal conversion and if convicted in such a case, a sentence of 5 to 10 years has been said.

Recently, the High Court, in a judgment, declared conversion to marriage is illegal. Hearing the petitions of Priyanshi alias Samreen and others, the High Court had said that it is not acceptable to change religion for marriage. Conversion of religion is not necessary for marriage. After this decision, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had announced that the government would enact an effective law.
