New Delhi : The Cyclone Warning Division of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday (October 4) that a new low pressure area is expected to form in the North Andaman Sea on October 9.

The division said that it is moving towards Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coast. Odisha and coastal Andhra Pradesh are likely to receive rains from October 11 to 13 due to the formation of low pressure areas.

The low pressure region is the first phase of any cyclone. However, it is not necessary that every low pressure area turns into a cyclonic storm.

Cyclones often occur in the Bay of Bengal in October. In October of 2013 and 2014, severe cyclones Phailin and Hudhud came. Both these storms caused huge devastation in the coastal areas of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.

“A new low pressure area is likely to form in the northern Andaman Sea and adjoining east central Bay of Bengal around October 9,” the department said.

“We are monitoring it (low pressure area),” said Director General of India Meteorological Department Mrityunjay Mohapatra.

An existing low pressure area lies on the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Odisha coast. However, the cyclonic circulation associated with it is likely to turn towards south Chhattisgarh on October 6 and remain active till October 7, the department said.

A low pressure zone is the first phase of a cyclone. However, it is not necessary that every area of low pressure be converted into a cyclonic storm. It is noteworthy that cyclones often occur in the Bay of Bengal in October.
