New Delhi : January 15 is a very special day for the Indian Army. The Indian Army celebrates this day as Army Day. The Indian Army is celebrating its 73rd Foundation Day on Friday. On this occasion, Army Day Parade will be organized at Kariyappa Ground in Cantt, Capital Delhi. Army Chief General MM Narwane will take the parade salute and address the soldiers.

On the occasion of Army Day, Chief of Defense Staff General Bipin Rawat gave his message saying, ‘We pay tribute and gratitude to those brave soldiers whose valor and supreme sacrifice for duty, we are renewed with firmness and motivation to dedicate oneself. ‘

Army Day is celebrated every year in honor of Cariappa
There are two big reasons for celebrating Army Day on 15 January. The first is that the Indian Army was completely liberated from the British Army from the day of 15 January 1949. On the same day, General K M Cariappa was made Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army. In this way Lieutenant Cariappa became the first army chief of democratic India. K M Cariappa was very famous under the name ‘Kippar’. In fact, after the independence of the country on 15 August 1947, the British Indian Army was divided into two parts. One was the Pakistan Army and the other part was the Indian Army.

Born on 28 January 1899 in Kurg, Karnataka, Cariappa is the only Indian to have been appointed as Field Marshal. Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw was the second officer to be given the rank of Field Marshal.

Cariappa showed indomitable courage and strong leadership in the war against Pakistan in 1947. He was made the GOC-in-Sea of the Western Command during the Pakistan War. Under his leadership, India defeated the Pakistani army over Zoji La, Dras and Kargil.
