Hookah bars in Guwahati to be shutdown, Orders Assam government

Guwahati : Assam government has issued a notice to close all the hookah bars in Guwahati. All outlets operating hookah bars under the jurisdiction of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) have been ordered to be closed by the state government. The official notice was issued by the Commissioner of GMC on 18 December.

It is for the information of all concerned who are running the business of hookah bars under the jurisdiction of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation, it said in the official notification. They are notified to close all the Hukkah Bar outlets operating within the city of Guwahati.

The notice also states that renewing the business license or issuing new licenses will not be done. The hookah bar is to be closed within seven days of the issue of the notice.

Guwahati has a good number of hookah bars. Earlier in September this year, the Allahabad High Court had also ordered a ban on hookah bars in Uttar Pradesh. The High Court ordered the Chief Secretary of the state not to allow any restaurant or cafe in the state to run hookah bars.
