Surat : The contribution of Surat city of Gujarat is increasing rapidly in the effort to increase indigenous products for the Indian Army. The cloth to make army uniforms, shoes, parachutes, bags and bulletproof jackets was previously being imported from other countries but now, it will be made in the textile industry of Surat.
Defense fabric is being prepared keeping in mind the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) guidelines here. The special thing is that the Army has given its approval and the first order has also been received from the Army to prepare 10 lakh meter defense fabric.
According to the information, Surat’s textile entrepreneurs had a virtual meeting with the officials of DRDO and CII’s South Gujarat Organization in September to make defense fabric for the Army. Where Sanjay Saravagi, MD of Laxmipati Group said that, they will get this cloth prepared on the guidelines of DRDO. A sample of defense fabric was sent for testing before Diwali. After the approval of the army, work was started on making defense fabric with the help of 5-7 big producers. It is being told that according to the agreed deal, it should be ready in the next two months.
This initiative is being linked to Prime Minister Modi’s self-sufficient India campaign. Because, till now the defense fabric was sourced from China, Taiwan or Korea. Keeping in view the demand of time and inflation, DRDO is insisting on developing indigenous things. In the same effort, the textile mill of Surat got the first order for the manufacture of defense fabric.
65% of the country’s cloth is manufactured here
It is known that about 50 million meters of cloth is used every year for more than 50 lakh soldiers of Indian Army and Police. And, with the special fabric being made in Surat, this need will be fulfilled to a large extent. Because, it is believed that 65% of the country’s fabric is manufactured in Surat.
