New Delhi : The Supreme Court asked the Centre to place the recently framed OTT regulation before the court by Friday. The Supreme Court observed that there should be some screening of the web shows, films and other content that are telecast on OTT platforms.

A plea was being heard by the Supreme Court on the controversy surrounding Amazon Prime Video’s latest show ‘Tandav’.

“Some regulation is needed for web content as pornography is also being telecast on such platforms and a balance has to be maintained,” said the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court further said that it would examine the Centre’s regulation on Friday and also hear the anticipatory bail plea of Amazon’s Aparna Purohit.

Amazon Prime Video on Tuesday apologised over ‘Tandav’ controversy and said that it respects its viewers’ “diverse beliefs”.

Last week, the government brought new guidelines for social media and OTT platforms to ensure compliance with local laws.

According to the new regulations for social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter as well as OTT platforms such as Netflix-Amazon prime, it will have to remove any content flagged by authorities within 36 hours and set up a complaint redressal mechanism with an officer being based in the country.

With this, now after the regulations, it is also mandatory for platforms such as Twitter and WhatsApp to identify the originator of a message that authorities consider to be anti-national and against the security and sovereignty of the country.
