Ahmedabad : Counting of elections held for municipalities, district panchayats and taluka panchayats in Gujarat took place yesterday. Tight security arrangements were made for the counting of votes. The counting of votes started from eight o’clock in the morning. Out of a total of 8473 seats, candidates have been elected unopposed in 237 seats in 81 municipalities, 31 district panchayats and 231 taluka panchayats. Now the results have also come.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has won this election. In Gujarat, the BJP won all the district elections with a clear majority in 196 out of 231 taluka panchayats as well as in 74 out of 81 municipalities. The main opposition party Congress in the state looked weak. Congress won a clear majority in only one municipality and 18 taluka panchayats. At the same time, AIMIM and AAP also made their remarkable presence.

Earlier in the first phase of the civic elections held in Gujarat last month, the BJP won all six municipal corporations. The counting of votes for the second phase of elections began at nine in the morning and the BJP overtook the Congress by winning 6,236 out of 8,470 seats. The Congress won only 1,805 seats while AAP and AIMIM won 42 and 17 seats respectively. However, the situation was not clear on the four seats.

Asaduddin Owaisi’s party AIMIM won nine seats in the Modasa municipality in Aravalli district. Along with this, they won one seat in Bharuch and seven seats in Godhra of Panchmahal. The Aam Aadmi Party won 31 seats in the taluka panchayat, two seats in the zilla panchayat and nine seats in the municipality.

On this victory, PM Modi tweeted that ‘the results of the municipal, taluka panchayat and zilla panchayat elections all over Gujarat give a clear message – Gujarat is with BJP’s agenda of development and good governance’. He said that ‘I salute the people of Gujarat for their unwavering faith and affection for the BJP.’
