New Delhi : The central government has opposed gay (same sex) marriages in the Delhi High Court. The government said on Thursday that the same-sex couple living together as partners and not having sex can not be compared to an Indian family.

The central government has presented its stand in the court in response to a petition seeking to approve gay marriage under the Hindu Marriage Act and the Special Marriage Act. Several petitions have been filed in the High Court seeking approval to gay marriage. Among them are two women who have been living together for the last several years and have demanded to approve gay marriage.

The central government said that marriage can be a matter of two persons, which has an effect on their personal life, but it cannot be left only in the concept of privacy. Sarkar said, “Living together as a partner and having sexual relationship with the same sex cannot be compared to an Indian family unit which has a husband, wife and children. It has a biological male ‘husband’, biological female ‘wife’ and their union produces children.”
