Pune : India has banned the export of the Covishield vaccine jointly produced by Oxford University-AstraZeneca and the Serum Institute for the next few months. Serum Institute CEO Adar Poonawala has revealed this on Sunday. Adar Poonawala has agreed to produce around 100 crore doses for developing countries.

Adar Poonawala said that most of the vaccines produced this year are reserved by rich countries. The Serum Institute is the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer. Doses are mainly manufactured by this company for developing countries. Poonawala said that poor countries would have to wait for the first dose of the vaccine for some time as India imposed an export ban.

The Board of Regulators of India on Sunday approved the emergency use of Covishield. However, a condition has been placed that the vaccine cannot be exported until it is determined that a large population in India has been protected by the vaccine. Poonawal said that the company has also been banned from selling the vaccine in the private market. At the moment, we can only give vaccines to the Indian government and we are not allowed to advertise the vaccine through hoardings.

Adar Poonawala said that the Serum Institute was in the process of signing a major deal of 300 to 400 million doses. This is in addition to a 100 million dose agreement and an agreement with Novavax. The deal will be finalized this week. Poonawala said that the first 100 million doses would be sold to the Indian government. The special price will be Rs 200 (2.74) per dose. The cost of this dose will then increase. In the private market, the vaccine will cost Rs 1000 per dose. States of India will be vaccinated as required within 7 to 10 days after the conclusion of the agreement with the Government of India.

Adar Poonawalla also said that the company plans to supply 200 to 300 million doses of World Health Organization COVAX by December 2021. Adar Poonawala said that at present we cannot vaccinate everyone. We have to make vaccination a priority.
