New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi today laid the foundation stone of the Light House Project at six locations in 6 states under the Global Housing Construction Technology Competition-India (GHTC-India) through video conferencing at around 11:30 AM on January 1, 2021. This is Prime Minister Modi’s first program in the new year.

Under the light house project, the central government will build more than 1000 light houses in six cities – Indore, Chennai, Ranchi, Agartala, Lucknow and Rajkot. Apart from the Minister of Housing and Urban Development Hardeep Singh Puri, the program also includes the Chief Ministers of Tripura, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs had on 2017 launched a challenge for states and UTs to select six locations across the country for the construction of ‘light house projects’ under GHTC-India. The Ministry had encouraged all States and Union Territories to participate actively in this challenge and announced to provide ‘Light House Projects’ to the six states and UTs scoring the highest marks as per the laid down norms.

As per the guidelines of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY-Urban), these states were provided central assistance for the construction of these projects. In addition to this, provision of Technology Innovation Grant (TIG) was also made to deal with issues related to the use of new technology and economies and to overcome the impact of any additional cost due to other related factors. Under this project, earthquake resistant houses will be built and will be very cheap.

Which states are included in this project
The light house project includes Tripura, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. The Light House Project is an ambitious scheme of the Union Urban Ministry under which people are provided with sustainable housing keeping in mind the local climate and ecology. Under the LHP project, houses are being constructed for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS). Under this, 415 sq ft flats will be handed over to the urban poor (EWS) for just Rs five lakh.
