AR Rahman’s mother Karima Begum passes away

Mumbai : Karima Begum, the mother of Bollywood’s famous singer and music composer AR Rahman, died in Chennai on Monday morning. Rahman himself gave this information. He confirmed the news of her death by sharing his mother’s picture on social media. Karima Begum had been ill for some time, after which she breathed her last on December 28. According to sources, the last rites of Karima Begum will be performed on Monday evening.

Karima Begum was married to Rajagopal Kulasekhar (RK Shekhar), an Indian music composer who has predominantly acted in Malayalam films. He composed music for 52 films, including 23 Malayalam films with 127 songs. His debut song was ‘Chotta Muthal Chudala Vare’, which proved to be a huge hit in Kerala. The song was composed for the 1964 film ‘Pazhassi Raja’.

AR Rahman has been very close to his mother. Rahman was earlier named Dilip Kumar. Karima Begum’s name was Kasturi Shekhar. AR Rahman was just 9 years old when his father died. AR Rahman married Saira Banu in 1995. He is the father of three children. They have two daughters Khatija Rehman and Rahima Rehman. While one son is AR Amin.
