Cancer institute founder Dr. V Shanta passes away at 93 in Chennai

New Delhi : Doctor V Shanta, senior oncologist and president of Adyar Cancer Institute, passed away on Tuesday morning. She was 93 years old. She was given the ‘Ramon Magsaysay Award’ in 2005. At the same time, the Government of India awarded her the Padma Vibhushan in 2015. The ‘Nobel Prize’ scientist S. Chandrasekhar was his maternal uncle and famous scientist and Nobel laureate CV Raman was his maternal grandfather’s brother. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the death of Dr. Shanta.

Dr. Shanta was taken to a private hospital after complaining of chest pain at around nine o’clock on Monday night. Sources in the Cancer Institute said that she breathed her last at 3.55 am on Tuesday. Her body has been taken to the Old Cancer Institute campus, which she built along with his mentor Dr. Krishnamurthy.

Dr. Shanta was active till before hospitalisation. Her colleagues reported that she had not been feeling well for a few days. She was also concerned about new health-related challenges at the time of the epidemic. Her Cancer Institute is an institution that provides high quality care to all people in society, without looking at their ability to pay. Those who cannot afford treatment are provided free treatment.

Prime Minister Modi expressed grief
On the death of Dr. Shanta, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, ‘Dr. V Shanta will be remembered for her outstanding efforts to ensure top quality cancer care. The Cancer Institute at Adyar, Chennai is at the forefront of serving the poor and downtrodden. I recall my visit to the Institute in 2018. Saddened by Dr. V Shanta’s demise. Om Shanti.’
